It’s Already the Second Week of February
If you don’t have you seeds in small starter pots this is something that you need to get to sooner than later.
About 2 and a half weeks ago I put tomato and pepper seeds in to begin to germinate.
I down in 6 different varieties of tomatoes. Black Krim, Brandywine Pink, Abe Lincoln, BoxCar Willy, Rutgers, and Mortgage Lifters. I am looking forward to the Rutgers after reading about them. That is a new type of tomato so yes I bought the heirloom seeds from Burpee. I will of course save those seeds this fall and with any luck will never have to buy that type of seed again.
Not all of them are up yet but I would guess that about 80% are up.
I have over watered in the past when seedlings come up and I have rotted some of the roots and of course lost those plants. So be careful not to do the same. Even at this early stage don’t be afraid to let the soil get fairly dry before re-watering.
Here are what some of the tomato seedlings look like right now. Notice that I plant two seeds in each small pot. I want to be sure I have a good seed in the ground. Two seeds increases my odds.
Once I am convinced that I have a healthy plant I very gently pull on of them out or you can cut the stem half way down.
